Grey’s Anomaly

with 4 comments

I love Grey’s Anatomy. I bought the first season on DVD in HMV a few years back and said ‘hmm, I wonder if this will be any good.’ When I sat down to watch it that evening, I was totally engrossed. What can I say? I love the narration, the sum up quips at the end with the life lessons, the fact that whenever one of the main characters is having a problem, there’s always a suffering patient with a similar problem on the same day that somehow helps them see the light. Let’s face it; the show is also great for a good cry. All those emotions flying around makes it difficult not to get caught up in it. Yes, I’m a sucker for all that stuff. They certainly know how to write a dramatic episode, that’s for sure. The season finale of season 5 last May was possibly the best TV show finale I have ever seen. I sat bolt upright and I’m pretty sure I actually gasped. If Grey’s Anatomy was a novel, I’d read it cover to cover. I’d never be able to put it down.

However, there’s one thing about those doctors that really grinds my gears. I was willing to let this slide if they cleaned up their act with the new season but as I was watching the season six premiere, there it was. Staring me right in the face. I’m not letting this one go. If something happened to me while I was in Seattle on a fictional holiday, I would not be delighted to be operated on by Dr. Calle Torres or any other female surgeon on Grey’s. Why? Dangly earrings, that’s why. If I see another episode of those earrings hanging over open surgery I am going to be very exasperated indeed. It takes me out of the whole story. I don’t care if that lovable fictional character lives or dies. All I can focus on is those earrings and the damage they would do if they dangled into the patient’s intestines. So the next time you’re watching those doctors in action, have a look at their ears. If you can’t focus on anything else, then my job here is done. We’re all going to suffer.

Dr Horrible Stole My Heart (With His Freeze Ray)

with 10 comments

I’ve loved the show ‘How I met your mother’ since its first episode. It is now in its fourth season and has never been funnier. My Freaks and Geeks obsession is no secret so I first heard about the show because Jason Segel is in it. I keep very up to date on everything the Freaks and Geeks gang are up to. Himself and Alyson Hannigan who you will all know from Buffy are one of the cutest on-screen couples that I have ever come across. Cobie Smulders who plays Robin is both attractive and funny. The main character Ted (whom the show centres around) I don’t care for at all. However, this post is not about why I don’t like Ted, how much I like Lilly or even about Jason Segel. It’s about my ultimate favourite character; the shining star of the show- Barney played my Neil Patrick Harris. I’ve always thought of Barney as the heart of the show. His personality and general antics are hilarious and if you haven’t caught the show yet, I highly recommend you do.

I had never really thought about Neil Patrick Harris in another role. I didn’t think he would shine as strong in any other role so I never really looked up anything else he did before HIMYM. This week, my opinion slapped me in the face. I stumbled upon Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and I was proven very wrong about him. The comic womanizer I loved was replaced with his polar opposite- a self conscious, musical super villain that is afraid to speak to his heart’s desire. I was surprised to find that I loved this character even more than Barney Stinson. What a voice he has! I enjoyed Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, not just because it showed the multi-layered talent that is Neil Patrick Harris but because the story divided into its three acts was musically talented, funny and downright different.

Neil Patrick Harris. You are amazing.

United States of Tara

with 6 comments

United States of Tara is a new TV show that premiered on January 18th. I caught the first episode after hearing it was from Diablo Cody, writer of Juno. I wondered if it would live up to my expectations and I’m excited to say that it did. Toni Collette is an amazing actress. I’ve always liked her and I’m sure it’s a real challenge to pull off a multiple personalities role but she does so wonderfully. She’s a great comic. I was delighted to see John Corbett  back on my screen again. I always liked him as Aidan in Sex and The City so it’s nice to see him settled into another TV role so well. Take that Carrie Bradshaw!

The show itself is centered around a working mother of two with dissociative identity disorder. When she gets stressed out, she takes on a different personality with amusing results as you can gather. This week we met Tara herself, ‘T’, the fifteen year old destructive teenager and Buck, my personal favourite, a smoker, drinker, fighter and young lady lover. This first episode set up the characters nicely- caring husband dealing with his wife’s issues and trying not to be unfaithful with one of her alter egos, a typical teenage daughter that likes sex, has a bad taste in men and irrational mood swings and a caring, Martha Stewart-like son who I found very endearing.

I don’t usually bond so much with the characters of a show on the first episode but I’ve got a good feeling about United States of Tara. I laughed all the way through until it ended much too soon for my liking. Hopefully it can keep up the great standard. So check it out if you think you might enjoy it. It might give you a few laughs too.
